The FLDWAV Analysis Tool (FLDAT) is a JAVA GUI developed to visualize the hydraulic effects of flooding computed by the FLDWAV hydraulic routing model.  It's primary function is to reduce the time needed to  build FLDWAV datasets; reduce the time needed to calibrate FLDWAV models; and improve the user’s ability to analyze FLDWAV results.  The components of FLDAT are:

  • Input Component – visualizes input data (e.g., hydrographs, profiles, and cross sections), and creates a FLDWAV input deck;
  • Cross Section Analysis Component – ingests cross section data from various sources (e.g., HEC surveyed cross sections, GIS-based cross sections) and interactively converts them to top width vs. elevation table format; simplifies cross sections (e.g., averaging over a reach, converting to general shape factors); and analyzes cross section information;
  • Graphical Output Component – displays hydraulic information generated by FLDWAV (e.g., profiles and hydrographs of flows, elevations, velocities, areas, etc.);
  • Output Analysis Component – captures “blow-ups” and provides potential causes for them; and anticipates potential model instabilities and provides warning messages to the user.

FLDAT was developed at NWS under the direction of Janice Sylvestre.  The last NWS Beta Release was in 2005.
